6 Steps to enhance your career prospects in the legal industry – #NCW2017
by Heat Recruitment
Working as specialist recruiters in the legal industry, we are often asked by candidates what their career prospects are and how they can take steps to improve them.
We appreciate that even thinking about making a change in your career is a big decision. However, if you enter the job market in the correct way, with a clear focus on what you want, your career prospects will increase dramatically.
Here are a few key pointers to assist you in securing better career prospects:
1. BUILD YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK:
Having a wealth of connections within the Legal industry will boost your career and make you more desirable to potential employers. Attending industry specific events can help with this – just remember your business cards!
Have a reputation that speaks for itself; the legal industry talks – you want it to say great things about you.
2. ASK DIRECTLY FOR AN APPRAISAL:
Not everyone enjoys appraisals, but they can give you a great insight into where you need to improve and also what you are great at. This will allow you to play to your strengths and work on those areas where improvements are needed.
3.TAKE ADDITIONAL COURSES:
Learning never stops! – As Henry Ford once said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young”. The scope of the legal market is constantly changing, and so keeping your mind sharp is vital when it comes to impressing potential employers.
4. IDENTIFY YOUR PRIORITIES:
Once you’ve established your goals (long, medium and short-term) it is important to identify the smaller milestones that will allow you to measure your progress along the way. Making SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time focused) goals will help you to do this.
5. MAKE A PLAN:
Decide on what’s most important to you, both in terms of the job role and company. Be clear on this with your recruiter, and work with them in pursuing opportunities that fulfil these ambitions.
6. CONSIDER CONTRACT/LOCUM ASSIGNMENTS:
Remember you don’t always have to find a permanent role if you are able to be flexible with your requirements it is definitely worth considering the Locum market.
What’s the end goal? – work with your recruiter to get to where you want to be and improve your career prospects in the legal Industry. Therefore, be honest in what you want and build a solid relationship with your recruiter so you work together to find a great new role. You can view all our current legal vacancies here.
